Historic Heitmann Townhouse on Chatham Square REF: 1013
Originally built by Matilda Heitmann, this residence is a registered Savannah Historic Foundation dwelling. The current owner completed extensive renovations a few years ago and has now decided to make this property available for your vacation getaway. This beautifully decorated home has been lovingly restored while retaining a sense of comfort. It is truly a “home away from home”.
Chatham Square was recently magically transformed to the 1860s as Robert Redford shot scenes for his latest video production, “The Conspirator”, based on a true story about a woman eventually hanged for her part in the Lincoln assassination conspiracy. Looking out from this townhome’s parlor windows, it was easy to imagine a time over a 150 years ago as the ladies in long dresses and bonnets, gentlemen in their top hats, and horse drawn carriages milled around under the giant, moss covered live oaks of Chatham Square.
This upscale townhouse is located within Savannah's legitimate Landmark Historic District, south of River Street, north of Gaston Street, east of MLK Jr. Boulevard, and west of Broad Street. Translation: You are actually in easy walking distance to everywhere you wish to be. Or, a carriage will pick you up from your doorsteps. Call a pedicab to take you to or from dinner. It is all easy to do from this great location.
Whether you are visiting Savannah to enjoy the stunning architecture of a time past or to visit landmarks made famous in movies, this townhome is perfectly located for your exploration. For example, leave your front door and walk two blocks west and you will be looking at the Mercer-Williams House made famous in the movie, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”. One block up from there is Forsyth Park. You’ll find yourself drawn back there over and over again. If you want to walk down one of the most beautiful streets in the world, leave your “home away from home” walk across Chatham Square and you are one block away from Jones Street.
If it is food you want, the selections are endless as Savannah has lots of great restaurants. For a casual lunch that shouldn’t be missed, Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room is located just around the corner at 107 West Jones. It is easy to find as the line forms early for the 11:00 o’clock opening. You’ll smell the aromas of fried chicken, cornbread dressing, black-eyed peas and biscuits long before you get there. Or, just keep walking a few blocks down Jones Street to Clary’s. Walking north down Bull Street to the main business area and the riverfront will take you to any type of restaurant you can imagine, all located within an easy distance.
Whatever you choose to do while in Savannah, the townhome on Chatham Square will be a quiet oasis which you will look forward to returning to each day and not want to leave when your stay is over. The home has everything you could possible need to be comfortable.
A few of the highlights: 1. The parlor and the den are separated by functioning pocket doors. Each area has plenty of comfortable seating whether you want to read, listen to music, or view the TV.
