Savannah’s Theatre District

Long considered one of “Top Ten” historic destination cities in the United States to visit, Downtown Savannah Georgia bears watching even more so during the next few decades. An aggressive tourism friendly master plan is being shaped, implemented, and carried forward to the next level by a robust assortment of associations embodied by The Savannah Economic Development Association, The Creative Coast Initiative, The Downtown Business Association, The Ellis Square Association, and The Savannah Waterfront Association. The well underway renovation in the 1970’s under Mayor John Rousakis’ visionary reclamation of the Savannah Riverfront area led to a resurgent reclamation of even more architectural gems throughout the entire Landmark District. With the phenomenal growth and artistic influence of Savannah College of Art and Design over the past three decades, Savannah not only hosts a widely acclaimed Music Festival every spring and a celebrity laden Film Festival every fall but historic theatres present a variety of Broadway style theatrical productions, concerts, and other live performances in the most sterling venues you are likely to find this side of 42nd Street. With that premise in mind, the Savannah Supporters of the Performing Arts, a Savannah based group of performing arts supporters, are pleased to present the true jewels of the Savannah Theatre District found at the variety of venues on the Savannah Stage Playbill.

Downtown Savannah’s Theatre District is scattered in and close by Savannah’s legendary 2.5 square mile Landmark Historic District. One of the most concentrated areas serving up world class performances one can find in the southeast, Savannah’s Theater District more closely resembles the easy stroll Big Apple Broadway based theatre district. There are several key venues in easy walking distance from one location to the next and other locations just a short pedi-cab or scoot-coupe ride away with some a short drive further. Catch the popular Broadway on Bull performance at the Historic Savannah Theatre. Enjoy Puccini’s Tosca at the Lucas Theatre for the Arts or a live concert at the Trustees Theater on Broughton Street to name just a handful of performances at their historic venues. Savannah boasts not only featured resident theatre companies but many of the major performing arts disciplines such as ballet, music, opera and theater troupes that make scheduled appearances as well. Located in the true creative heart of The Historic District, The Theatre District is also just steps away from a memorable collection of clubs, bars and restaurants that are all quite lively into the early hours every weekend. Many outdoor al fresco performances are held at scheduled times in the spring, summer, and fall season throughout the district.
